<image:caption>From the series that I called, "Our Lady of the Roses," to represent the essence of a divine healing realm, which contains relics of the past, ruins of civilization in counterpoint to nature. The river of roses here are in the form of a female body, behind the head of an Ancient Greek statue. I called this painting, “ Head of Athena,” with a feminist focus, on the Greek myth of Athena, who was born from the head of her father Zeus. Here the focus switches from Zeus to Athena and what sprang from her head.</image:caption>

Usually working in series, when I employ a reoccurring image, like the ribcage or roses, for example, I choose them for their literal and visual presence, and equally for what they symbolize. I use the ribcage for its butterfly-like shape, and its function as a cage for the heart. Simultaneously, it symbolizes the essential, the bare bones, as well as what remains behind.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Life as Myth - Sacrifice- Orpheus & Eurydice 1990 oils/canvas 52 x 44"</image:title>
<image:caption>One of my first paintings, based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, where Orpheus goes to the underworld to retrieve his beloved Eurydice. “Sacrifice” is a large theme, it can be tragic or holy or many things in between. The word history of sacrifice means to make sacred. For me the woman in these myth based paintings is also Mother Earth or Mother Nature, who is being sacrificed. My raw approach to painting presents an unexpected juxtaposition of images. As I edit, I allow essential elements from each layer to remain visible, in this painting, for example , the double male image.</image:caption>

The pelvis represents creativity, reproduction, fertility, Mother Earth.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Biomorphic - Releasing My Butterflies - diptych 1997 oils/canvas 60 x 96"</image:title>
<image:caption>This diptych is a biomorphic symphony! It followed "Double Fetus Butterfly" with the backbone of that piece now expanded into a whole ribcage and the wailing pelvis divided, encircling the double fetus butterfly. An example in my work of the personal shifting into the universal is the Wailing Pelvis and Double Fetus Butterfly images, which came to me when I was painting my sorrow, as my grown sons were leaving home. However, as I painted, it became something much deeper, a wailing Mother Earth grieving for the loss of her children and the destruction of her environment. This ‘double fetus butterfly’ image that appears in much of my work, may have been a premonition of the vanishing butterflies.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Biomorphic - Dbl. Fetus Butterfly w. Wailing Pelvis 1997 oils/cnvs. 60 x 48"</image:title>
<image:caption>Using the body as metaphor to address the human psyche, my work is rich in content with strong archetypal and biomorphic images. Although my initiating impetus is often rooted in the personal, the completed works speak to the universal, reflecting larger concerns with the soul of humanity and our severely impacted natural environment. An example in my work of the personal shifting into the universal is the Wailing Pelvis image (1995-97) which came to me when I was painting my sorrow, as my grown sons were leaving home. However, as I painted, it became something much deeper, a wailing Mother Earth grieving for the loss of her children and the destruction of her environment. The wailing pelvis image represents fertility, Mother Nature and her horror at the abuse and neglect of earth and the environment.</image:caption>

      <image:title>New Gallery - Releasing My Butterflies Diptych 1997 60 x 96" oils/canvas</image:title>

Black oil and red blood strewn across the canvas became a self portrait with mask, that expanded to include a skeletal figure. <image:title>Skyscapes - Dragon Blood Tree #2 2024 oils/canvas 48 x 60"</image:title>
<image:caption>Expanding the sky imagery, this piece was a departure in mediums as well. I used dry pastels to gently capture the feeling of the tree. When the pastels didnt adhere to the oil painted layer beneath, I took some cadmium yellow oil paint to detail the trees edges and a wash of oil medium over the pastels. I looked away from the canvas for a while, watching the strong rain surrounding my windowed studio. When I returned to the canvas, the whole painting was running down the surface, essentially painting itself.</image:caption>

The pelvis represents creativity, reproduction, fertility, Mother Earth.</image:caption>

      <image:title>STUDIO SLIDESHOW - Releasing My Butterflies Diptych 1997 60 x 96" oils/canvas</image:title>

<image:caption>Among my first paintings, I painted this during the Persian Gulf crisis in 1991. Black oil and red blood strewn across the canvas became a self portrait with mask, that expanded to include a skeletal figure. I saw it as mother, daughter and holy ghost, discovering in retrospect that centuries before the patriarchal trinity prevailed, a female trinity held the collective’s central position of spiritual strength.</image:caption>
